Lt. Gov. Brian Calley represents Michigan at Manufacturing USA Congressional Briefing in Washington, D.C.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley Wednesday underscored Michigan's role as an advanced manufacturing leader at a national congressional briefing in Washington, D.C.

Michigan is home to the only co-located Manufacturing USA institutes with LIFT (Lightweighting Industries for Tomorrow) and IACMI (Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation), located in Corktown, Detroit. These institutes are public-private partnerships between the U.S. Department of Defense, the state of Michigan, manufacturers and academia. They are and will play a crucial role in restoring American leadership in manufacturing. Together these co-located institutes help accelerate the development and deployment of lightweight materials and composites that will provide more fuel-efficient vehicles, safer and stronger armor and materiel, and provide training opportunities for students and workers alike.

"Manufacturing has been a staple of our economy since we put the world on wheels," Calley said. "Now we are focused on innovating and taking manufacturing to the next level. By creating an environment where businesses can succeed, we went from worst to first in manufacturing job growth and will continue to play a leading role in keeping American manufacturing ahead of the world."

The briefing, hosted by the House and Senate Manufacturing Caucuses in conjunction with Manufacturing USA and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, focused on securing global leadership in advanced manufacturing, enhancing national security and accelerating economic growth.
